H. Richard Greene, Program Director
To say that H.Richard Greene is a passionate teacher is an understatement. Actors leave his classes speaking of life-changing experiences. To say that he is a powerful actor is truthful. He has masterfully headed up the US Performing Arts/UCLA Arts Camps/Workshops Theater Conservatory for three straight years and continues in that capacity. He has served as the director of The Actors' Labs at the Coronet Theatre since its inception in 1997 and currently teaches an advanced lab for the professional actor at The New Place Theatre in North Hollywood. As Visiting Associate Professor, he taught on the faculty of the UCLA Department of Theater and was President of The Venture West Theater Company. In both Los Angeles and New York, he serves as a private acting coach. As an actor, Mr. Greene received critical acclaim in his New York debut as MacDuff in Macbeth with Rip Torn and Geraldine Page. He was a resident member of the Repertory Theatre of Lincoln Center, appearing there in Mary Stuart, Twelfth Night, Narrow Road To The Deep North, Play Strindberg, and The Crucible. His other Broadway credits include The Survivor at the Morosco, Romeo And Juliet at Circle in the Square, and the international tour of Brighton Beach Memoirs, directed by Gene Saks. He appeared in RICHARD III with Kevin Kline at The New York Shakespeare Festival and toured with Janet Gaynor in On Golden Pond and Cybill Shepherd in Lunch Hour. In the world premiere of the Off-Broadway hit, Family Business, he originated the role of Bobby Stein, reprising this part for the American Playhouse Series on PBS. His extensive regional credits include Timon Of Athens with James Earl Jones at the Yale Repertory Theatre, Taming Of The Shrew with Glenn Close at the Washington, D.C. Shakespeare Festival, Death Of A Salesman with Pat Hingle at Buffalo's Studio Arena, and Cyrano De Bergerac with Frank Langella at the Williamstown Theatre. On the West Coast, Mr. Greene performed in The Price at International City Theatre, Dance Of Death at the Los Angeles Theatre Center, and King Lear, Merchant Of Venice and Two Gentlemen Of Verona at the Old Globe in San Diego. Most recently he was seen as the Headmaster in The History Boys at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. On The West Wing, he portrayed Senator Royce, the Republican Majority Leader, and on Boston Legal he appeared in the recurring role of Judge Hingham. Other recent television appearances include guest-staring roles on Madmen, Without A Trace, According To Jim, and Cold Case.

The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television (TFT) is the only university in the country where the study of theater, film, television and digital media is integrated within a single professional school.

The Department of Film, Television and Digital Media offers a wide range of courses for undergraduates in the study of three areas of moving images: Critical Studies, including the history, theory and aesthetics of both film and television; Production/Directing, including film, television (studio and field), digital, experimental and animation; and the film and television disciplines, including writing, producing, cinematography, sound recording and editing.

At the graduate level, there are five areas of concentration: Critical Studies, which offers film and television history and theory; aesthetics and popular culture, films from diverse genres and extensive national cinemas; Production/Directing, which trains students in all aspects of directing narrative fiction, documentaries and/or experimental film, emphasizing the aesthetic components; Screenwriting, in which the elements of character, dialogue, story and tone are explored; Animation, in which students are trained to create an individual style and voice; and the Producers Program, in which students learn the business and art of making films and television programs.

At UCLA's Department of Theater, we believe that great theater programs must prepare and train students for careers in all contemporary and emerging entertainment forms -- including live theater, film, television, video, themed entertainment, interactive gaming, and more. Our students live in a world that is interactive, collaborative, and fueled by their passion for our art form -- one that encompasses the many forms of professional practice as well as the theoretical exploration of current and emerging entertainment forms.

With this professional training, students are following in the footsteps of such illustrious alumni as Francis Ford Coppola, Tim Robbins, James Dean, Carol Burnett, Susan Egan, Jack Black, Ben Stiller and many others.

TFT's extraordinary undergraduate and graduate students are drawn from an admissions pool of the finest students from around the world, and enjoy participation in small classes with faculty members who themselves are accomplished artists and industry leaders.
