You're beginning your senior year in high school. The college performing arts auditions are looming. Your questions are mounting. What is a contemporary monologue? Where do I find the right one for me? How do I approach classical work? How do I present myself in the interview? I want to do musical theater. Do I have to act and dance? How do I prepare? Is my preparation enough from my own school? This UCLA Arts Camp intensive College Audition Workshop will give you the tools to forge ahead with confidence next fall. Guided by three of UCLA's top faculty members from the Theater Department with years of wisdom and experience on both sides of the audition table, you will spend your days with April Shawhan (Acting), Karen Morrow (Voice and Music), and Nicholas Gunn (Movement and Dance) putting together the elements you will need for your college audition. This workshop has a limited enrollment. Register early to ensure your space.

The College Audition Workshop provides a rare opportunity for you to prepare for the audition and interview process that is essential for your college application to top theater training programs. Under the guidance of UCLA Theater faculty you will gain valuable insights for this significant component of your college application process. Note that participation in the Workshop does not constitute an application or audition for UCLA's Theater Program.

Students check-in between 1pm and 2:30pm on the first day of camp.
Flights should arrive into Los Angeles International (LAX) on the first day of camp between 10am and 12pm.
Flights should depart from Los Angeles International (LAX) on the day after camp ends (Saturday) between 9am and 12pm. There will be an additional $100 fee for the overnight stay.
Airport transportation is available to and from Los Angeles International (LAX) for $30 each way.

Program Directors

April Shawhan, Program Co-Director
April Shawhan is an actress, director, and a member of the adjunct faculty of the UCLA Theater Department. She has brought her teaching talents to the Trinity Rep Conservatory, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Playwright's Horizons. She has directed and acted in countless plays on Broadway, Off Broadway and Regional Theater playing such roles as Blanche in Streetcar Named Desire, Jane Seymour in Hal Prince's Rex and Hero in Much Ado About Nothing for the Tyrone Guthrie. She brings her extraordinary talent, energy and guidance to the Theater Camp of the UCLA Arts Camp and along with other theater faculty has made that program into a major acting arena for young people.

Karen Morrow, Program Co-Director
Voice and Music Co-Director Karen Morrow is an award winning actress/singer. She has starred on Broadway in such productions as A Joyful Noise, I'm Solomon, Music, Music, the Grass Harp, and the Tony Award winning Mystery of Edwin Drood. Her Off-Broadway credits include her starring roles in The Sing Muse and the Boys from Syracuse. A favorite actress of New York theater audiences, Miss Morrow appeared for five seasons with the New York City Center and most recently she stared in the National Tour of Jerome Kern's Showboat. Miss Morrow has received an Emmy, the coveted Theatre World Award, an Ovation nomination and five Dramalogue Awards. Along with her theatre, television, commercial, concert and cabaret appearances, Karen conducts a bi-monthly Master Class in performance and audition skills. Most recently a professor in the Bolger Music Theatre Program at UCLA, Karen Morrow is a well sought after teacher/performer who travels the U.S conducting Master Classes for other universities and Arts Conferences.

Tom Pardoe
Tom Pardoe joins the UCLA Arts Camp Faculty teaching movement and dance in the College Audition Workshop. Tom got his start n the acting program at the University of Iowa. He studied with Gus Giordano's Jazz Dance Chicago before entering PCPA Theaterfest theater program. He attended The Theater School at De Paul University where he received his degree. Not a newcomer to Broadway Tom has appeared in Miss Saigon and Beauty and the Beast as well as An Evening with Betty Buckley at Carnegie Hall. He is well known to many audiences as he has been a part of world premieres such as A Christmas Carol at Madison Square Garden, Eliot Ness in Cleveland at the Denver Center and Narnia at PCPA. He has performed in over 40 musicals in regional theater and in the European Company of Jerome Robbins' West Side Story. When you meet him you may think he is your best friend because he has appeared in many television shows including The Drew Carey Show, The Education of Max Bickford and as a recurring role with Jennifer Love Hewitt in Time of Your Life. No newcomer to education he is an Adjunct Faculty at Cypress College in both Theater and Dance wih a growing list of choreographic successes including Sweet Charity, Bat Boy, and Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Tom Pardoe was the movement instructor for the new Warner Brother's movie Aqua Man and currently teaches an ongoing movement class for actors in Hollywood California. He is a welcome addition to the College Audition Workshop.

The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television (TFT) is the only university in the country where the study of theater, film, television and digital media is integrated within a single professional school.

The Department of Film, Television and Digital Media offers a wide range of courses for undergraduates in the study of three areas of moving images: Critical Studies, including the history, theory and aesthetics of both film and television; Production/Directing, including film, television (studio and field), digital, experimental and animation; and the film and television disciplines, including writing, producing, cinematography, sound recording and editing.

At the graduate level, there are five areas of concentration: Critical Studies, which offers film and television history and theory; aesthetics and popular culture, films from diverse genres and extensive national cinemas; Production/Directing, which trains students in all aspects of directing narrative fiction, documentaries and/or experimental film, emphasizing the aesthetic components; Screenwriting, in which the elements of character, dialogue, story and tone are explored; Animation, in which students are trained to create an individual style and voice; and the Producers Program, in which students learn the business and art of making films and television programs.

At UCLA's Department of Theater, we believe that great theater programs must prepare and train students for careers in all contemporary and emerging entertainment forms -- including live theater, film, television, video, themed entertainment, interactive gaming, and more.
