Behind the Seams Details

This first-ever workshop is being taught by award winning Hollywood professionals who live and work locally, an advantage that only UCLA can offer. If you have ever wondered how your favorite characters in film and television were created - look no further. Costume design is one tool the director uses to tell the story and costumes provide the channel for the actor to transform into an authentic character. This landmark workshop will cover the role of the costume designer and the basic techniques of costume design for theater, film and television. Using the same costume shop utilized for major productions at UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, students will participate in the creative journey of bringing to life the people in a play or screenplay. Costume design is a collaborative art and our faculty and support team will nurture your creative vision. We will provide you with the opportunity to show your work at the end of the workshop with a final musical and stage performance in front of an audience.

This workshop focuses on the fundamental process of costume design, which begins with reading and analyzing a script, breaking down the script for character changes, collaborating with the director, researching and sketching the costumes, creating mood boards and a color palette, the transformation of the actor in the fitting room, designing in the context of the set and lighting, aging and distressing costumes, and coordinating costumes for a final production. With a syllabus for students with a serious interest in design, this workshop will include UCLA Film Archive screenings, discussions on the history of Hollywood costume design, visits to Hollywood studio costume shops, the Warner Brothers Museum and Western Costume Company. Hollywood costume designers may drop in as special guests sharing their work and providing students with a further understanding of costuming genre such as science fiction, animation, fantasy film, designing for CGI and motion capture.

BEHIND THE SEAMS WORKSHOP collaborates with the Musical Theater and Theater Acting Conservatories. During the second week of the workshop, you will practice what you have learned and contribute your designs to a production under the guidance of a professional costume designer. Artistic invention flourishes in the classrooms of the internationally recognized UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television and you will be inspired.

The BEHIND THE SEAMS WORKSHOP provides each student with the rare opportunity to examine the process of costume design from script to performance. For ages 15 and above, no previous design experience or knowledge of sewing is necessary, just a passion for storytelling through costume design.
