This workshop focuses on the fundamental process of costume design, which begins with reading and analyzing a script, breaking down the script for character changes, collaborating with the director, researching and sketching the costumes, creating mood boards and a color palette, the transformation of the actor in the fitting room, designing in the context of the set and lighting, aging and distressing costumes, and coordinating costumes for a final production. With a syllabus for students with a serious interest in design, this workshop will include UCLA Film Archive screenings, discussions on the history of Hollywood costume design, visits to Hollywood studio costume shops, the Warner Brothers Museum and Western Costume Company. Hollywood costume designers may drop in as special guests sharing their work and providing students with a further understanding of costuming genre such as science fiction, animation, fantasy film, designing for CGI and motion capture.
BEHIND THE SEAMS WORKSHOP collaborates with the Musical Theater and Theater Acting Conservatories. During the second week of the workshop, you will practice what you have learned and contribute your designs to a production under the guidance of a professional costume designer. Artistic invention flourishes in the classrooms of the internationally recognized UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television and you will be inspired.
The BEHIND THE SEAMS WORKSHOP provides each student with the rare opportunity to examine the process of costume design from script to performance. For ages 15 and above, no previous design experience or knowledge of sewing is necessary, just a passion for storytelling through costume design.
