Camp/Workshop Details

Program Director: John Pasquin, Philip Charles MacKenzie

Acting and performing in front of the camera although similar to theater is distinctive in approach and technique. This camp is a must for anyone wanting to know about acting for movies or television as it offers the camper the experience of working in single camera acting techniques and understanding what the relationship is of the camera to the performance. Campers will be trained in many of the technical requirements that an actor must know to work successfully in the profession. Workshops in cold reading, audition techniques, camera-combat and focus concentration are part of the campers week long experience. Focused on performance, campers are trained by professionals in the motion picture and television industry and each camper will get the experience of working in front of the camera to realize a finished scene. Guest speakers may drop in from time to time to share their knowledge with the camp. This is another one of the camps that fills quickly. So register early!

Philip Charles MacKenzie

Faculty

A very prolific actor, director he is an MFA acting graduate from the NYU (now Tisch) School of the Arts where he studied with, among others,Olympia Dukakis, Peter Kass, Lloyd Richards, Mel Shapiro, Carl Weber, Nora Dunphy and Omar Shapli. In New York, he performed at the New York Shakespeare Festival, Joseph Papp's Public Theatre and Off-Broadway, notably in "El Grande DeCoca Cola" with Ron Silver and Jeff Goldblum. He has performed at the Arena Stage in Washington D.C., the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, the Cleveland Playhouse, the Folger Theatre as well as other regional theatres throughout the United States. Coming to Los Angeles in the mid 1970's he moved into the world of television in all of its forms; variety, situation comedy, and drama appearing as a guest actor on many shows on television and as a regular cast member on NBC's "Six O'clock Follies" with Laurence Fishburne before moving to CBS and Gary David Goldberg's "Making the Grade" Mr. MacKenzie landed his most important role, that of the flamboyantly Donald Maltby on the critically acclaimed and groundbreaking comedy series "Brothers" for the Showtime Cable for which he was nominated four times and received the Cable Ace Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. With that series Mr. MacKenzie moved to directing and garnered a Best Director nomination in the last two seasons of the series. This led to Mr. Mackenzie?s extensive directing work in the sitcom and single camera half hour genre on hundreds of episodes of "Roseanne", "Frasier", "Suddenly Susan", "Just Shoot Me", "My Wife and Kids", "Dharma and Greg", "George Lopez" and "According to Jim". Then in trhe late 90?s he directed the feature film, "Attention Shoppers". All the while his directing career was flourishing Mr. Mackenzie kept his roots while teaching Acting for Directors at the Loft Studio in Los Angeles, giving directors the tools and language to be better able to communicate with actors. Most recently he was on the faculty of the Actors Center in New York where he taught THE ACTOR ON FILM. Given his vast experience Philip is an actor?s director as he has a unique perspective on what it takes for an actor to be effective on screen. We are pleased that he now heads up the Acting for the Camera Workshops in 2009. Please see IMBD for a complete list of all television and movies that Mr. MacKenzie has directed!

Location Information

UCLA TFT UCLA is one of America's most prestigious universities, and their theater department is rated number one in North America. Bordered on the north by protected wilderness and on the south by Westwood Village, UCLA has long been known as an entertainment magnet for the entire Los Angeles area. Selected for their artistic and professional achievements, UCLA 's exceptional faculty from the School of Theater, Film and Television lead these inspiring workshops.

The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television (TFT) is the only university in the country where the study of theater, film, television and digital media is integrated within a single professional school.

The Department of Film, Television and Digital Media offers a wide range of courses for undergraduates in the study of three areas of moving images: Critical Studies, including the history, theory and aesthetics of both film and television; Production/Directing, including film, television (studio and field), digital, experimental and animation; and the film and television disciplines, including writing, producing, cinematography, sound recording and editing.

At the graduate level, there are five areas of concentration: Critical Studies, which offers film and television history and theory; aesthetics and popular culture, films from diverse genres and extensive national cinemas; Production/Directing, which trains students in all aspects of directing narrative fiction, documentaries and/or experimental film, emphasizing the aesthetic components; Screenwriting, in which the elements of character, dialogue, story and tone are explored; Animation, in which students are trained to create an individual style and voice; and the Producers Program, in which students learn the business and art of making films and television programs.

At UCLA's Department of Theater, we believe that great theater programs must prepare and train students for careers in all contemporary and emerging entertainment forms -- including live theater, film, television, video, themed entertainment, interactive gaming, and more. Our students live in a world that is interactive, collaborative, and fueled by their passion for our art form -- one that encompasses the many forms of professional practice as well as the theoretical exploration of current and emerging entertainment forms.

Igniting our students' talent and passion to achieve success is our goal. That is why students work with a distinguished faculty composed of professional and creative artists who have excelled in their fields. UCLA Theater has some of the most distinguished faculty and visiting artists in the world, among them Mel Shapiro, Annette Bening, Anthony Hopkins, Larry Moss, Neil Jampolis, Deborah Scott and Jerry Katzman. With this professional training, students are following in the footsteps of such illustrious alumni as Francis Ford Coppola, Tim Robbins, James Dean, Carol Burnett, Susan Egan, Jack Black, Ben Stiller and many others.

TFT's extraordinary undergraduate and graduate students are drawn from an admissions pool of the finest students from around the world, and enjoy participation in small classes with faculty members who themselves are accomplished artists and industry leaders.
