The University of Connecticut Jazz Camp provides aspiring young musicians with the opportunity to hone their instrumental jazz skills by studying closely with professional jazz artists and respected educators within the beautiful music department facilities on the University of Connecticut campus. Daily activities will include combo rehearsals, master classes and concerts by internationally recognized jazz instrumentalists, instruction in theory, improvisation and jazz history, and performance opportunities. Each week concludes with evening concerts for family and friends in University of Connecticut's von der Mehden Recital Hall. The camp is open to high school students with some jazz band experience, who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, or drum set.

Students check-in between 1:30 and 4pm on the first day of camp.
Flights should arrive into Bradley International Airport (BDL) or Hartford bus and rail depots on the first day of camp between 10am and 12:30pm.
Flights should depart from Bradley International Airport (BDL) or Hartford bus and rail depots on the last day of camp after 6pm.
Transportation is available to and from Bradley International Airport (BDL) or Hartford bus and rail depots for $30 each way.



Program Directors

Earl MacDonald, Program Director, Piano
Earl MacDonald lives jazz, as a performer, composer and educator. Currently the director of jazz studies at the University of Connecticut, the Winnipeg native earned degrees in jazz performance and jazz studies from McGill University and Rutgers, where he apprenticed with Kenny Barron. He is dedicated to music education, participating as a clinician, guest conductor and teacher at summer camps, in addition to his position at University of Connecticut. From 1998 - 2000, MacDonald was the musical director, pianist, and arranger for the Maynard Ferguson Big Bop Nouveau Band. As music director he was responsible for programming and rehearsing this world-renowned ensemble. In 2002, MacDonald won the Sammy Nestico Award, for outstanding big band arranging. His compositions for 17-piece jazz ensemble are featured on the University of Connecticut Jazz CD, recorded by the University of Connecticut Jazz Ensemble. MacDonald is currently a member of the esteemed BMI Jazz Composers' Workshop in New York City. His new sextet, the Earl MacDonald 6 garnered first place in the 2004 Hartford Advocate Reader's Poll for "Best Jazz Group". Their debut recording, Echoes In The Night has received critical acclaim. Kyle Beecher, Trumpet

Kurt Berglund, Drums
Kurt Berglund is a versatile drummer, working with different bands in many different genres. A graduate of Western Connecticut State University in 1992 with a degree in percussion performance, where he won the Music Chairman's Award upon graduation, he had a chance to study with Joe Morello (Dave Brubeck Quartet), Joel Rosenblatt (Spyro Gyra, Michel Camilo), and Kenny Washington (Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Burrell). Since then, Kurt has worked in jazz trios as well as big bands, dixieland groups, as well as brass bands, even classical orchestras. He has travelled the East Coast numerous times, as well as performances in New Orleans and California. Kurt is a firm believer in being able to cover different styles, and having an authentic sound in each.

Chris Espy, Trombone

Rich Goldstein, Guitar
Hartford based guitarist Rich Goldstein graduated from the Hartt School of Music in 1993, and has since been involved as a dedicated faculty member and performer. He has appeared with a wide range of musicians including Andy Laverne, Nat Reeves Charles Flores, Horacio Hernandez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Houston Person, Stan Hope, Warren Chaisson, Reverend Hubert Powell, and Randy Johnston. He has performed at major jazz venues including Birdland, the Berklee Performance Center, Trumpets, the Zinc Bar, and the Jazz Gallery. Festival appearances include the Atlanta Jazz Fest (2001) Cancun Jazz Fest (2002), Festival of Arts and Ideas (2003), International Jazz Fest (2004), and the Sunken Garden Poetry Fest (2005). Recordings include Reminiscence; The Charles Flores Quartet featuring Horacio Hernandez (2000) and Something Makes Me Want to Dance; featuring Rob Zappulla and conducted and arranged by Lew Anderson. He has also recorded jingles for both radio and television. Mr. Goldstien also teaches guitar at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford CT, and has twice been a guest artist at Baldwin Wallace College in Cleveland, OH.

Henry Lugo, String Bass
Bassist Henry Lugo holds an undergraduate degree from Western Connecticut State University and a master's degree from The University of Texas at Austin. He has studied double bass with Drew Gress and Dr. David Neubert, principal bassist for the Austin Symphony. He performs throughout the New York area with the Noah Baerman Trio as well as a freelance bassist with various other artists. As a studio musician he has recorded for numerous film and television productions. Henry is on the faculty at the Westport Music Center and Charter Oak State College.
